UNDERSTANDING ANNUAL REPORTS
An annual report is an important element to help the shareholders in understanding how their investment is doing. They are also a good reference for people who are considering shares in the company for the first time.
Annual reports include the financial information of the company and are required by law to be accurately recorded according to stock exchange regulations and accounting standards.
Annual reports begin with a report from the Chairman and Chief Executive. These are the most widely read parts of annual reports because they provide a short summary of events during the year. Most reports also contain a longer and more detailed review of the performance of the business. Many companies include information on other issues of importance, such as new products and services, the environment and social responsibility. There are also statements that describe how the directors maintain control over the company (corporate governance) and how they are paid (directors remuneration).
The financial accounts follow up the written statement including the profit and loss summary, the balance sheet and cash flow as well as the auditors report.
The profit and loss report shows the years profit as compared to the previous year. It is a summary of the companys sales (revenue) and the profit that remains after expenses have been calculated.
